The terms your account runs on.

What this covers

OpenStoryHub is a writing tool and an API for one. These terms are the agreement between you and OpenStoryHub (“we”, “us”) for everything under openstoryhub.co: the editor, the public API at /api/v1, the MCP server, and anything else we put behind the same account. Opening an account, or using the API with a token issued to one, means you accept them.

Our handling of personal information is described in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of this agreement.

Who can open an account

You need to be at least 16 years old, and you need to be able to enter a binding agreement where you live. One person, one account: you may hold a second account for testing or for an agent you operate, but you are answerable for both.

Your account and your password

Keep your password and any API tokens to yourself. Anything done with your credentials is treated as done by you, which is also how the provenance record reads it. Tell us at hello@openstoryhub.co if you think someone else has your credentials.

Two limits worth knowing now. We do not yet verify email addresses, and there is no self-serve password reset. If you lose your password, recovery goes through the address above and depends on our being able to identify you. Use a password manager.

What you write stays yours

You keep every right you have in what you write here. We claim no ownership of your stories, scenes, revisions or notes.

To run the service we need a narrow permission: you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, copy, transmit and display your content for the purpose of operating OpenStoryHub for you, serving it back to your editor, keeping backups, and showing it to the people and clients you have shared it with. The licence exists to run the product and ends when your content is deleted.

We do not train AI models on your writing, and we do not sell it or license it to anyone who does. If that ever changes it will be an opt-in you are asked for, not a version bump on this page.

What is private and what is published

A story is private by default. Its visibility is a value on the record (private, circle, or public), and only you change it. Setting a story to public means its title and its contents can be read by anyone, including the feed on our home page and any API client with read access. Publishing is not reversible in the sense that matters: someone may have already read, copied or cached it before you changed your mind.

You are responsible for what you publish. Do not publish work you do not have the rights to, and do not publish other people’s private information.

The record is append-only

This is the part of the product most likely to surprise you, so it is stated plainly. Every checkpoint you file is a new row that names who wrote it. Nothing overwrites anything: a rollback is an insert that makes an older text current again, not an erasure of what came after it.

So text you cut is still in the history of that draft, visible to you and to any client you have granted read access to. Deleting a draft, a story, or your whole account deletes its revisions with it, and that is how you remove text from the record. There is no per-revision delete.

Agents and API clients

Any developer can register an OAuth client against this API, including you. A client only reaches your work after you have granted it scopes on a consent screen, and the token it gets names two identities: the client, and the person it is acting for. That is what puts an agent’s writing in the record as an agent’s.

Consequences you own:

• What an agent you authorised does with your drafts is your responsibility, the same as if you had typed it.
• Granting a scope to a third-party client sends your content to whoever operates that client, under their terms and their privacy policy, not ours.
• You can withdraw a consent at any time; it stops future access and does not retrieve what has already been read.

If you operate a client: honour the scopes you asked for, identify your client honestly, and do not use registration to work around a limit or a suspension.

What you may not do

• Break the law with it, or use it to harass, threaten or abuse anyone.
• Publish sexual content involving minors, content that incites violence, or content that infringes someone else’s rights.
• Attack the service: probing for holes beyond good-faith security research, scraping the public API in a way that degrades it for others, hammering endpoints, or breaking the rate and quota limits we set.
• Use another person’s account, credentials or tokens, or attempt to reach content you were not granted.
• Resell access to the API as if it were yours, or misrepresent your client as ours.

Good-faith security research is welcome. Report what you find to hello@openstoryhub.co before you tell anyone else, do not access other people’s content, and we will not come after you.

The service is early

OpenStoryHub is in active development. Endpoints change, features arrive and get withdrawn, and there is no uptime commitment. The service is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows.

Keep your own copies of work that matters to you. Compile exports the whole draft in reading order and is the intended way to do that.

Limits of liability

To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, or lost or corrupted content, and our total liability to you for any claim relating to the service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or CAD $100.

Nothing here excludes liability that cannot be excluded under the law that applies to you: in Québec, that includes our obligations for our own intentional or gross fault, and the protections of the Consumer Protection Act where it applies.

Ending it

You can close your account at any time by writing to hello@openstoryhub.co; self-serve deletion is on the way. Closing it deletes your stories, drafts, revisions and consents.

We can suspend or close an account that breaks section 08, that puts the service or its users at risk, or that we are required by law to act on. Where it is reasonable to do so we will tell you first and give you a chance to export your work.

Changes to these terms

These terms carry a version (the one at the top of this page), and the version you accepted is stored with your account, so the record shows which document you agreed to rather than merely that you agreed to something. If we change them materially we will say so on this page, and where the change affects your rights we will ask you to accept the new version before you carry on. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept it.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Québec and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, and the courts of the judicial district of Montréal have jurisdiction, without depriving you of any protection you have under the mandatory law of the place where you live.
